Education Support Centre Overview

 

 Merriwa Education Support Centre is located off Marmion Avenue in the rapidly developing northern suburbs. The Centre caters for primary aged children with an intellectual and/or physical disability. The school shares the site and facilities with Merriwa Primary School. The campus has a modern, attractive and inclusive design with the Centre classrooms fitted with appropriate resources to accommodate student requirements.

Both schools work closely together to develop a culture of promoting the highest ideals of learning and social interaction in an inclusive setting. We aspire to being a warm, friendly, welcoming school where manners, behaviour and personal effort are regarded as important, and where the needs of the individual child are placed at the centre of every decision. There is a rich cross fertilisation of professional knowledge between staff from both schools. Students are given the opportunity to integrate with their peers across the campus and have their learning needs met in the appropriate setting.

Learning resources include Information Technology to enable students to access curriculum relevant to their needs. Interactive whiteboards, computers, iPads and assistive communication devices are used in everyday learning tasks. Recently the creation of a Sensory and Therapy Room and outdoor sensory areas has enhanced the Centre's facilities. Also available is a functional kitchen and Life Skills room which support the delivery of purposeful learning programs.

Early Intensive Intervention Program for Students with Autism in Kindy and Pre-Primary

Since 2006, Merriwa ESC has facilitated the Department of Education's Intensive Intervention Program. This is a two year program that incorporates a range of strategies which are based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). ABA is an internationally recognised approach to understanding and changing behaviour and this intervention has proven to be beneficial for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. ABA incorporates Discrete Trial Training, independent work, small group work and structured play. The program focuses on shaping student behaviour and improving social skills as well as creating clear communication systems. The aim is to deliver a program which is closely aligned with the Early Years learning Framework, Kindy guidelines and the WA Curriculum in order to facilitate a successful transition into the child's local primary school for Year 1.
